"Here is my voice, Alexander Graham Bell". Bell uttered these words in 1885 in an attempt to transmit his voice over the telephone. The early phone connected people but it also created a virtual space where another person was present as a voice even though he was not physically present. While the phone can do many things today, its basic operation is still important to us. The way the phone can connect people near and far materialized in a new way during the Covid-19 virus, when people could not meet or even be in the same room. Many were comforted to hear the familiar voice from the phone’s speaker. All the sounds in ‘Hear is My Voice’ come from phones and phone conversations, including the voice of A. G. Bell, but they are heard modified by means of granular synthesis and transformed into musical material.
